Being an ethical breeder

Mating a female is not that simple, you dont take the first male that comes up, to breed dog is more complex than that. Please do not breed a female to have you childent live the experience, or your  female needs to have babies because she does not. You should know that we must breed with a female that is with the breed standard, that is registered with your breed club, tested for genetic health problems of the breed. And above all you must know that the female will most likely  have 5 or 6 puppies or +,  you will have to find a good home for each of them, get them vaccinated, registered, warranty, feed them for nine weeks, and these puppies will end up where ??? in a puppie mill ?????????

A good breeder is going to ask to fill out a questionnaire to potential future client  and will ask for a visit to his home to meet future family, a good breeder will take the dog if the family is unable to keep it, it will require the sterilization of puppy with proof of vet, or will sterilized before leaving if possible (older dog).

Too often when selecting a male ''breeders'' with no experience will make a decision on the nearest, or even the most decorated show dog. CH of a dog with the AKC-CKC can be done at 6 mount when the puppy has not is adult size  yet, the puppy can often no longer conform to the breed standard as an adult (and believe me I seen it very often and I heard that breeders do the CH when dog is a puppy because it will be too bitg as an adult).  Im no longer part of the kennel clubs like the CKC-AKC, because any puppy can be registered without proof of bieng true to breed standard and no health test done, consanguineous mating etc ... That's why I came back with the Jack Russell Terrier club of Canada and the real Jack Russell Terriers, no terriers can me registered before 1 year of age, when the dog is registered he as to have a health test done by the vet and health certificate signed by vet, pictures front, back side signed by the vet also.

Mating a female with the male of the hour does not guarantee beautiful puppies. The faults are easily hidden in conformation shows,  but can not be hidden in breeding.. Without considering the faults, attributes and the dominant traits of individual lines, chances are less than fair. Look preferably for a male or lineage whose strong point possibly compensate for the weakness of your female. Find a male that will correct the faults of your female. To have a better idea of the male potentiel, try to see is offspring. Breed with dogs that have titles of works, hunting, obedience, agility, fly ball etc ... And above all dogs that are well balanced in their heads.

The owner of a male should not give its agreement to every requests made to breed is dogs. Be passionate about breeding is not to make money. (you will not be rich when you do it ethically) Before accepting, professionalism requires he must ask some questions. His genetics are good? Is she a good representative of the breed? Is she is registered in the breed club? for my race as JRTCC or JRTCA  (NO CLUB CANIN).          Do the owners of the female are aware of the costs involved in raising a litter to term? Do they have homes ready for the puppies? How long can they keep the puppies that are not placed?  Is the female tested for brucellosis?

Is the female is tested for genetic-hereditary diseases of the breed in question?

There are people who say it's not easy to refuse the amount of money to be gained with this coupling, but it's certainly not good for the reputation of having puppies with too many faults and genetic diseases, Fot ethical breeders is not to make money. Some will say: ''If my dog does not mate the female someone else will''               If you decide not to accept the proposal, do your best to tell the owner of the female what are the reasons and why she should not have puppies. Most people will listen, but if they are determined you can only hope that the next breeder they seek is as professional as you. You may want to be sure to refer them to another breeder who plans is litters like you. Most people will get discouraged if they are denied service 2 times, at least I hope so.

Require sterilization on your contract and ask for proof of it by a signed vet certificate.

Finally, be honest with yourself and with others. Leave no question unanswered in your quest for the perfect dog and what your reputation as a breeder will be done.

Breeder educate people and require sterilization, too many dogs are abandoned and end up in shelters or are euthanize. An ethical breeder will take back is dogs if people can not keep them. An ethical breeder does not sell puppies in pet stores,  we have  a code of ethics to follow wth the breed club http://www.exmoorjrt.ca/acceuil/code-and-ethics-of-jrtcc, the day  the sale of animals in pet stores will be finish, there will be fewer abandoned dog.

I am a dog breeder since 1998. I spend a lot of time learning about pedigrees, watching the dogs, talk and learn from those in my breed and those outside. I raise  each litter as if I gave them birth and takes time to  place my puppies in good homse that will love them for life. I bring to the  world only puppies that I think will be most healthy (mentally and physically) and the best examples of their breed.
I support every family that chooses one of my puppies and  they are now a part of our big  family. I treat them all well.
I will always be  here if a puppy needs to come back home and I do everything in my power to go get a dog if it is the wrong place. I old them when they are born and when they leave this world. I share my knowledge and socialize my dogs so they are all my devotion to them. I do not keep note of the time and money I put in my love of dogs, that  is not  what I am.
The price I ask for my puppy is never a profit, but an investment in the next generation. I am not ashamed of who I am and what I do ...
I work hard to be a good breeder and encourage and help others. I am a breeder and I am proud of it.
If we do not support each other - we are doomed as dog lovers.
Thank you!

I am breeder and I am proud to be.

If we do not support each other - we are doomed as passionate.

People say JRT are hyper actif and crazy, hard to train, hard headed etc... and I ear people say they need 2 hours of exercise per day..... NO they are not hyper active or crazy, they need to be stimulated mentally and physically and have a job to do like any other breed they need to work, and most of all teach them to relax and reinforce when they are relaxing. If you give them 2 hours per day they will want 3h and so on. Instead teach him to relax, and reinforce when he is doing nothing. And with R+ its so easy see my videos. Reinforce good behavior and dont ignore but change the mind of the dog for bad behaviors. see videos                                   And with the R + it's so easy to see my videos below

You have to be consistent with a dog!

I loves it I share

it's been a long time I say the Jack Russell Terriers not hard headed and they are easy to train, how do you do for your dogs remain motionless when you take the photos etc ....
and I finally found the perfect answer
thank you Jean Lessard
'Someone asked me about a dog: "Is he a hard head?"
My answer ... And I insist and I believe (remember that I also trained seals, lynxes, cougars, chickens, a camel and a polar bear!)
"There is no dog with a hard head. There are good or bad coaches ..."

Moral: Learn to lead. This is not rocket science; this is technical. And it has nothing to do with the strength! Nothing!

Please, share it! '

I love this so I share
I always said that JRT are not head strong, or hard to train, people ask me how do you make them stay like that for pictures etc....?
and now how found the perfect thing to say to people thank you Jean Lessard.
''someone ask me about a dog '' is he head strong??
My response....... I insist and I beleve it ( remember that I trained, seals, lynx, cougars and chickens, bears, and camel)
'' There is no dog that are head strong. They are just good or bad trainers......''
Moral: lern to train. Its not complicated: its technique. And it as nothing to do with fermness at all.
please share!

reinforcing calmness
This is just a day in the life of Lumos the puppy going on a socialization trip (just raw footage, not meant as a tutorial or anything). We never ask him to settle, he just does it when he wants to. Reinforcing calmness really pays off and I truly believe improves the quality of a dogs life (not to mention the quality of our lives to be around a calm dog!)

Before you train tricks to you new puppy, think carefully... What would you like your puppy "offering" to you, before you have taught him the concept that behaviors should happen only after a cue. If spin is your puppies first behavior, he might offer spinning as the response to you ignoring him, or if he is confused during training. HOWEVER, if you reinforce and train 4 strong calm behaviors first, behaviors you want your puppy to offer when confused, THAT is what you will get when your puppy does not know what to do next during a training session. For example- eye contact, laying down, settling, sitting, and standing calmly.
